A Florida man whose dog came face-to-face with an 8-foot-long alligator saved his beloved pet – by killing the gator. The incident happened in the backyard of the man’s Deltona home, where he was watching his dog, Winston, sniff around. That’s when he noticed the alligator – at the exact same time the giant reptile appeared to notice Winston, the man says. The gator lunged forward and sunk its teeth into Winston’s skull as the unidentified man drew a gun and fired four shots, hitting the alligator in the head. "I don’t even think there was a thought," the homeowner says. "I mean, you just spring into action and do what you have to do to save your dog. Twenty seconds later, I probably would’ve had a dead dog." But as it turned out, Winston miraculously survived the attack, suffering only a minor puncture wound on his ear, the man says. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has since removed the gator’s body, a rep confirms.

Does the fact that this man hasn't been charged mean the life of a dog is more important than the life of an alligator?
