Patti Scialfa, member of the E Street Band and wife of Bruce Springsteen, has revealed the secret diagnosis she has been battling for the past six years.
Scialfa opened up about her private health battle for the first time in the new documentary Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, revealing that she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a blood cancer that forms in plasma cells found in bone barrow, in 2018, per People. The documentary follows the rocker and the band as they prepare for their first tour since 2017; however, touring has become a bit more challenging for Scialfa following her diagnosis.
"I've been performing with this band for 40 years. With those first performances, it felt so good to be back onstage. Touring has become a challenge for me," she said. "In 2018, well, Bruce and I were doing a play on Broadway. I was diagnosed with early stage multiple myeloma."
Despite the new challenges that force her to be more "careful" about what she does, Scialfa still enjoys performing and has come to terms with her "new normal."
"This affects my immune system so I just have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go," she said. "Every once in a while, I come to a show or two and I can sing a few songs onstage, and that's been a treat. That's the new normal for me right now, and I'm OK with that."
Scialfa and Springsteen have been married for 33 years and share three children: sons Evan, 34, and Sam, 30, and daughter Jessica, 32.
