James Hetfield has admitted that Metallica were so poor while making Ride the Lightning in Denmark that they had to steal stuff just to survive.
Hetfield revealed the band's criminal ways on The Metallica Report. He said that when they were recording in the winter of 1984 at Sweet Silence Studios they were "up in the attic, sleeping on the floor and stealing food from other bands that were coming through there, stealing bikes just to get around, stealing empty beer bottles to go turn them in for more beer.”
Hetfield laughed and added, “There was a lot of thieving. We didn’t have anything, we didn’t have [crap]. So it wasn’t thieving, we were just borrowing it forever!"
