The city of Delray Beach is currently dealing with an aggressive panhandling problem. A dilemma that many local businesses deal with on a daily basis.
Restaurants in Delray Beach have a lot of outside dining areas and the panhandlers have no issue approaching the customers to ask for money.
According to the city, panhandlers have cursed out people, threatened visitors, and blocked the path of people they've solicited money from.
On Wednesday afternoon, the City Commission cleared the first hurdle in implementing a new ordinance.
The new ordinance would restrict panhandling after dark and would ban panhandling within 20 feet of a restaurant, bus or trolley stop, ATM, or any parking lot or parking meter.
The second reading of the new ordinance will happen on February 18 and will allow the public to comment on the issue.
