Disney has finally given fans a first look at its "real" retractable lightsaber with a video posted to YouTube showing the saber in action.
The company started teasing the retractable lightsaber in April. According to reports, the new toy lightsaber doesn't require any plastic prop blades. Instead, it features a light-up blade that extends out from the completely normal-looking hilt.
Sadly, the quick announcement doesn't provide too many details on how the saber works, but that didn't stop people on the internet from figuring out a rough idea from Disney’s patent filings.
According to rumors, the new blade works similar to a motorized tape measure, retracting and extending a sheet of plastic and LED lights to mimic the ignition effect.
The new lightsaber will be part of Disney’s upcoming Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser immersive hotel. They are still in the works but should be available when the hotel launches in 2022.
