Thirty South Florida teens spent their Friday learning how to build a generator.

The students from various Palm Beach County high schools were taking part in a competition as a way to kickstart their future careers in the energy industry.

The event was hosted at FPL's Command Center.

"By exposing these students to all of the opportunity that our company produces across so many different departments...you can inspire someone to think about their future in a career like energy who might not have ever thought of it before."

FPL Community Relations Strategist Whitney Cunningham Walker says the students were broken up into teams and everyone on the winning team received $1,000 scholarships through the Path to College non-profit.

Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) and its parent company, NextEra Energy (NEE), hosted the workshop along with partners American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE) - Florida chapter and Palm Beach County-based non-profit Path to College.
