Miami, FL - Miami will continue one of its most recognizable holiday traditions as Latin Cafe 2000 hosts the 8th Annual Pig Pardoning ceremony at 10 a.m.
The event marks the beginning of the season for many residents and highlights the city’s cultural connection to pork dishes commonly served during the holidays.
This year's ceremony will feature a pig named 6-7, who will receive a symbolic "get out of caja china free" card.
The caja china, a roasting box widely used in Cuban style cooking, is a staple in Miami households preparing pork for Nochebuena and other celebrations.
The yearly pardon is a lighthearted gesture that reflects these long standing culinary customs without any political or legal implications.
Guests attending the event at Latin Cafe 2000 will be offered spinach croquetas and freshly brewed cafecito as part of the morning program.
The cafe has hosted the tradition for eight consecutive years, drawing regular visitors as well as newcomers interested in experiencing a Miami themed holiday event.
According to Latin Cafe 2000 owner Eric Castellanos, the ceremony has become a consistent seasonal gathering for the community.
He stated that the event reflects Miami’s diverse cultural makeup and its emphasis on traditions centered around food, family, and celebration.
Miami’s connection to pork during the holiday season is rooted in decades of cultural practice, particularly within Cuban and Latin American communities where roast pork remains a central dish.
The Pig Pardoning event continues to acknowledge this heritage while offering a public kickoff to the city’s holiday festivities.
