Declining birth rates are a problem in several countries, but so far only one leader has broken down in tears and begged mothers to have more kids.
North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un was addressing thousands of women at a National Mothers’ Meeting on Sunday when his tears started to flow.
He dabbed at his eyes with a handkerchief and told the women in attendance that “Preventing a decline in birth rates and good childcare are all of our housekeeping duties.”
The last data released by North Korea was in 2008, but South Korea claims the North’s fertility rate has declined steadily for the last decade, which might explain why this was the first National Mothers’ Meeting in 11 years in North Korea.
