A historic Super El Niño is forecast to dominate the 2026-2027 winter, dramatically influencing storm tracks, snowfall, and temperatures across the United States. According to the latest updates from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), this El Niño could become the strongest on record in over 75 years, with far-reaching effects through spring.

During an El Niño, warm water in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean alters atmospheric pressure patterns, which in turn changes global weather. Impacts are expected to be most widespread between December and March, when the southern storm track strengthens and brings wetter conditions from California through the Gulf Coast.

The latest outlook from NOAA forecasts a much wetter winter across the southern tier of the U.S., raising the risk of flooding and mudslides but also offering relief to drought-stricken areas.

Meanwhile, AccuWeather’s Paul Pastelok describes the setup as having "the potential to be the strongest El Niño on record," almost certain to surpass the major events of previous decades. The pattern is expected to bring a stormier start to the season for the Sierra Nevada, Great Basin, and Rockies, with heavy snow possible in areas that missed out last winter. However, the Northeast, Midwest, and Northwest are forecast to see less snow than average, with cities like Philadelphia and Boston predicted to receive far less than last year. AccuWeather also warns that even with below-average snow projected, "it only takes one storm to flip the script," especially along the East Coast in late January and February.

Forecasts also indicate several atmospheric river events for California, potentially bringing feet of snow to high elevations and increasing flood risks at lower altitudes. The Four Corners and interior West regions are expected to benefit from the wet pattern, helping replenish water reservoirs after a poor 2025-2026 snow season. However, experts caution that "several wet and snowy winters" will still be needed to fully recover from drought.

Across the Midwest and Northeast, heating demands are expected to drop due to milder temperatures, with the greatest decrease forecast for Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. In contrast, colder weather could impact heating needs in the central Rockies, Southwest, and Gulf Coast.

Meteorologists emphasize that while the Super El Niño pattern sets general trends, short-term weather variations—such as cold snaps or major snowstorms—can still occur. The season will be closely watched for any changes in the Pacific storm track or unexpected atmospheric shifts that could alter snowfall and temperature predictions.
